2022 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Laura Baumeister’s Daughter of Rage

Date:

Laura Baumeister‘s Daughter of Rage might not have yet premiered at a major film festival but there is nonetheless lots of traction for the project that has been resting in post production for more than a year now. Industry people are eyeballing it, it just won the WIP Latam Industry Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival and appears to have found more producing partners with Nicaragua and France being joined by other nations such as Mexico, The Netherlands, Germany, and Norway. The filmmaker directed short films in the past – landing a spot in the Critic’s Week with Isabel im Winter (2014). This project received coin support in the shape of VIII Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum Best Project Award, the EFADs-CAACI Europe-Latin America Co-Production Award and the Artekino International Prize at San Sebastian Festival 2019. This could end up going anyone of the major fests with Sundance, Rotterdam, Berlinale and Cannes as legit world preem spots.

Gist: In the garbage dump of Nicaragua’s capital city, a mother and daughter struggle to survive collecting recyclable materials. When a bitter conflict arises between them, the mother, as a punishment, sends her daughter away to work at the garbage sorting belt near the dump. The girl becomes part of a group of abandoned children who work in exchange for food and shelter. Eventually the mother regrets her actions but her daughter no longer wants to return to her. Their relationship seems to be irrevocably damaged.

Production Co./Producers: Rossana Baumeister, Bruna Haddad.

Prediction: WORLD CINEMA DRAMATIC COMPETITION.

U.S. Distributor: Rights Available.
