Filmmaker Barry Jenkins is music to A24’s ears. They had a fun courtship with the entire Best Picture winning run for Moonlight, they landed the theatrical distribution rights to the Sundance preemed Sorry, Baby which he produced, and now they are now dancing partners on Be My Baby – the biographical drama about Ronnie Spector that was first announced back in 2020 with Zendaya taking on the lead.
Deadline reports that the project is comfortably in ready mode – Dave Kajganich adapted the film and had access to “Spector’s life rights and for Be My Baby, the memoir she wrote with Vince Waldron”. Depending on which project Jenkins hits next (The Natural Order was recently announced and he was once mentioned for projects such as, an untitled Alvin Ailey Biopic, The Intuitionist, Expatriate and Virunga) we could see this move into production as early as this year — we’ll be keeping close tabs. A24 produces alongside Marc Platt, Adam Siegel, Mark Itkin, Tom Shelly, and Zendaya, with Jonathan Greenfield serving as executive producer. Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak—Jenkins’ partners at Pastel—will also join as producers.
