Whale of a Tale: Stephan Elliott Harpons Guy Pearce & Kylie Minogue for “Flammable Children”

Date:

According to Variety, Guy Pearce and Kylie Minogue (Holy Motors) are officially are set to offer not much parental supervision alongside the already cast Radha Mitchell in Stephan Elliott’s eighth feature film, Flammable Children. Lensing will take place sometime soon.

Gist: Australia, 1975. The beach suburb of Dee Why is a place that revolves around surf mats, baby oil, boxed wine and the new miracle of Kentucky Fried Chicken. 14 year-old Jeff tries to find his feet in a world changing faster than his hormones, and deal with his crush on shy and sensitive girl-next-door Melly. When the beach town suddenly hits the spotlight after the body of a 200-ton whale is washed ashore, Jeff and Melly think it’s the biggest thing that ever happened in their lives. Meanwhile, their eccentric parents are catching up with the sexual revolution that has also washed up on Australia’s beaches. And just like the decaying whale, it’s all about to go spectacularly wrong.

Worth Noting: Elliott (who reunites with his The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert star) recently contributed to the portmanteau film: Rio, I Love You.

Do We Care?: While Elliott hasn’t made anything significant since 2008’s Easy Virtue and 70s set, coming of age films are a dime a dozen, this might carry a distinct Aussie eccentric flair to it. This is a likely TIFF 2017 candidate.
